McDonald's in Campinas

For anyone who knows me, you know that I dislike McDonald's greatly. Well, we have a McDonald's in Campinas and we were curious if it tasted the same as in the states. So, for dinner tonight we went to McDonald's. We were able to use a little bit of Portuguese which amounted to telling the cashier 2 number 7's with a coke, a number 1 with a coke and a kid's meal with a cheeseburger and an orange fanta. I know it doesn't sound like much, but we were so proud of ourselves. By the way, it tastes just like in the states.

I drove tonight, so remember to pray for me and the family as it has been a long time since I have driven a stick shift. I have never driven in Latin America and they make up their own driving rules - as they go!

Thank you for partnering with us in prayer. Please continue to pray for us as we continue to adjust and acclimate to things. We are starting to feel excitement about being here. Paul has been sitting here with his Portuguese dictionary trying to figure out words. He really wants to understand and be able to pick the language up as quickly as possible. He has made friends with the pastors son, Rodolfo and Rodolfo keeps sending emails with Portuguese phrases that Paul has to figure out. It is funny and I can't wait to hear this Mississippi boy start speaking Portuguese.

Dear Paul,

Welcome to Brazil. I don’t have your telephone number as of yet, but Caron and I wanted to let you know how excited we are about the arrival of you and your family.

The Campinas experience is a wonderful time to make friends, get to know the culture, and learn the Portuguese language. The south of Brazil is different, but it is a good place to begin the process of knowing the richness of Brazil.

Send me your new telephone number when you get a chance. I will try to call you this week. God bless you and your family.

Mark and Caron

Keri, when I spent a couple of months in Australia on summer missions (years ago!) the nearest Mickey D's was about 8 hours away in Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania. As a college student addicted to fast food, that was culture shock in itself! A couple took us on a tour of Tasmania and while we were in Hobart I BEGGED to eat at McDonald's, which they practically gagged at the thought of. I couldn't figure out why, because it tasted just about the same as at home. I guess we Americans just get used to all that junky fast food!

Hey, do ya'll have Diet Coke there? I talked to Cindy today, and I think the Dominican Republic Ratcliff family reunion has been postponed until 2009. Woo-Hoo! Porto Alegre, here we come! That is, if there is Diet Coke. Love Ya'll, Kami

Hey guys!

It has been great to read about your place there, and the McDonald's. I hope that having one will make things feel a little less strange.

We love you and miss you. I know that God is already moving there. I will be watching and waiting with anticipation to see Him move through you!

I know that Katie and Preston will do great in school. What an adventure for them!

Love, Tracy

McD's is sadly the same everywhere in the world! How are my boys? I sure hope they are feeling better about now. We are praying for them and you! Miss you already.

I am so glad you all are on the mend! We have all been praying for you. When we came back from Vietnam, Terri and I were thrilled when we spotted McDonald's! I am not a McD's person either, but that was Grace's first bit of American culture! At least she didn't eat the food.
